On Looking Back At The Celebrations

The Club celebrates all Kerala Festivals-traditions and heritage

The Club celebrates all the Kerala festivals for the benefit of its members in a true spirit of brotherhood. Glimpses from our festivities are shown here.

Onam Festivities

During Onam, the Club conducts competitions in Pookkalam, Kaikottikkali and other sports and games. As a fitting finale to the celebrations, the Club hosts a grand Ona Sadya in the traditional style and with gaiety We bring cooks from Kerala to prepare all the traditional dishes for this grand banquet for members. As an additional service, the Club makes available Paalada Pradhaman for those members interested in getting it for their celebrations at home.

An Ona Chantha' is arranged where various items such as Nentra Pazham, different varieties of banana chips, Onakkodi and other items are kept for sale, at very competitive rates for the benefit of members.

Xmas

Christmas and New Year Eve celebrations are a major draw every year. Here, too, our members join in large numbers to celebrate in a spirit of true gaiety and fervour.

Vishu The Harvest Festival

Vishu, celebrated as the beginning of new beginnings, is celebrated every year in the Club. One of the elderly members offers the traditional "Vishu Kaineettam' to all members present for the festivities A 'Vishu Kani' is arranged at the Club and in the evening a variety entertainment is held.

Kerala Piravi Day

The first of November, the day on which the State of Kerala was born, is celebrated by the Club each year as Kerala Piravi Day. Awareness about our beloved home state is instilled in the younger generation by conducting a Quiz Show on Kerala and the Malayalam language for Club members and their children. The Kerala Piravi Quiz this year was hosted by well-known Quiz Master, M Keshav.

Vijaya Dasami

Vijaya Dasami, the last day of the Navarathri festival is celebrated as Vijaya Dasami day. On this day, tiny tots are initiated into the world of letters in a traditional manner, as befitting a state that has the highest literacy rates in the Country.

Deepavali And Pongal

Deepavali and Pongal, which do not feature in the Malayalees calendar of festivals in Kerala, are celebrated with fervour by Malayalee Club as a symbol of solidarity with the people of Tamilnadu, where the Club is based.

Cultural Events

Apart from these annual festivals, the Club organizes at frequent intervals various Kerala cultural shows such as Ottan Thullal, Koothu, Mohiniyattam and other traditional dance forms.

Swati Smrithi - an annual music and dance festival with performances by eminent artistes to pay tributes to the royal composer, Sri Swati Thirunal, when his "kritis are rendered. Many stalwarts have performed in this annual event. We cherish with fond memories, the performances of 'pitamaha' Shn Semmangudi, the renowned TVG, PadmaShri KJ Yesudas and a host of others. The Club confers Swati Ratna on a renowned musician or dancer every year. Names to mention are Shri Semmangudi Shri KS Narayanaswamy, Shri KJ Yesudas, Smt P Leels and the Dhananjayans. The winners in the music competitions are given Swati Kiranam awards.

Other Programs

The Club frequently invites professional troupes for special programs. Of special mention are the Sound 'n' Light show one of its kind in India - a musical tribute to Mohammed Rafi, and Malayalam plays like 'Pulari' and 'Melvilasam all presented by the now world famous Soorya Krishnamoorthy troupe of Trivandrum.

Members's Celebrations

The Club provides a venue for members to celebrate their birthdays and/or wedding anniversaries. Every month the celebrating members are invited to this special event, when a cake is cut. Birthday wishes are personally conveyed by the Club President.

Gana Mela by the Club Members: The Club regularly conducts light music concerts by its members, thus providing an opportunity to members to demonstrate their musical talents Members.

Dramas: Members team up to showcase their histrionic talents by staging plays on different occasions.

National Harmony Programs: The Club invites other ethnic associations on National Harmony Day when their members bring their typical food items and share them with others in a rare show of national unity.

Other Entertainment

Film Shows: Every month the Club screens one of the latest Malayalam movies for the benefit of members attractive prizes are offered.

Club's Wings

Ladies Wing: The Club has an exclusive Ladies Wing. The members organise various programs, including the popular annual Kerala Food Festival. The Ladies Wing holds seminars and conferences by inviting experts in subjects which are of interest to women. These seminars range from medical/health issues, women's empowerment, women's rights, etc. The members also actively take part in various social service activities to reach out to the less fortunate among the non-resident Keralites in Chennai.

Youth Wing: YUVA specifically caters to the aspirations of the Club's young members. The youth wing was formed with the children of the members, with a view to nurturing future leaders and instilling social awareness among the youth. Eventually, they are groomed for future leadership roles, not only in the Club but in other spheres as well. They conduct various programs targeting the youngsters of the Club's families.

Children's Wing: The facilities offered to the children of the members include music and dance classes, Malayalam classes, an exclusive section in the library containing children's books in Malayalam and English. Competitions are held in debate, essay writing, painting. fancy dress and cultural events Children's Day is invariably celebrated on November 14 when the proceedings are conducted by children themselves.

Felicitation To Achievers

In its march towards progress and prosperity, the Malayalee Club recognizes Malayalees who have achieved eminence in different fields of human endeavour and honours them with rewards. The Club also recognizes young academic achievers and rewards them appropriately on different occasions.

These traditions by themselves will not be sufficient, when we think of a social club. For us at the Malayalee Club, however, the emphasis has always been to promote the traditions. But in terms of other infrastructure, the Club does not lag behind and has comparable facilities within its premises.

Facilities

Auditorium: The Club has a large auditorium, where all our general functions are held Members, if they so desire, can utilize this facility for their private functions or banquets.

Accommodation: The Club has well furnished single and double occupancy accommodation. Further, the Club has affiliation with other upcountry clubs, to enable members to get accommodation in other towns as well. Card Room: A well furnished, air-conditioned card room caters to the recreational requirements of its members. The card room draws a large number of members during the weekends.

Restaurant: A spacious, multi-cuisine restaurant offers a variety of food and beverages. Serviced by a team of trained staff, the restaurant specializes in Kerala dishes. This is a great boon to those who are looking for typical Kerala food.

Bar: Another specialty of the Club is its well stocked Bar, for the recreational needs of its members. The Bar stocks and serves a large variety of beverages and also cocktails, at competitive tariff.

Gym (Health Centre): The club has a well-equipped modern gym.Separate hours/days are allotted to men and women members.

Library: A unique service to its members, Use Club has a well stocked Library, with a large collection of Malayalam and English books. Rare reference volumes can also be obtained here.

The Club Journal: The Club publishes a bilingual in-house journal titled, The Club News, which encourages members and their family members to write literary articles, short stories, poems and other pieces. This is published once in two months and distributed to members free of charge. It offers a venue for members to nurture their literary talents. The Club News is the brain child of an Editorial Committee, comprising a few literary giants and working journalists.
